During times like these, we need a positive news source to keep us optimistic about the future. Through all the doom and gloom reported to us on various media channels, we want to be your light, your encouragement that there are still great things happening in Calgary. Best of Calgary is for celebrating the people, places and voices that make this city great, so let’s keep that running through thick and thin.

Here are five positive local initiatives that have popped up in Calgary to keep you going this week:

1. Dave Kelly Live Show

Tune in to Facebook for your daily dose of optimism with Dave Kelly, Mandy Stobo, Best of Calgary’s Jim Button and Russell Broom as these four discuss local heroes, feel-good stories and important topics to keep you thriving during self-isolation. Catch it at 10 am weekdays LIVE here.

2. Neil Zeller ‘Porchrait’ Shots

Calgary’s Best Photographer has begun offering porch portrait sessions as a way to connect with people in self-isolation to create a happy moment for fellow Calgarians in perhaps an otherwise dreary time. Anyone can sign up for these portrait sessions and Neil promises to put every dollar earned back into the Calgary economy to help get us back on our feet.

3. Mandy Stobo’s Bad Portraits of Local Heroes

Calgary’s Best Artist is using her talents to support local heroes who have thrived in this uncertain time and deserve recognition for stepping up to help others. Whether someone makes you smile, is working on the front lines, is optimistic about the future, a caring soul or just someone you want to feel good and be recognized for who they are, nominate them for one of Mandy’s famous ‘bad portraits.’

4. Morning Mindset With Mandy Balak & The Ace Class

Your day is as good as your mindset. This quickie intention setting will help you build habits for you to prioritize your health and your hustle. Each weekday, Mandy Balak will guide you through an intention setting, a mindful breath and explore habits that will help you cultivate more control in your day. Tune in to The Ace Class live stream on Facebook or Instagram every weekday morning at 8:30 am.

5. DIY Delivery from Pinnovate Craft Studio

Pinnovate Craft Studio, based out of Mahogany, turned their business on its head last week and went from a brick and mortar craft studio serving mostly kids to a delivery service bringing craft kits for kids and families directly to their door. No parent expected to be both working from home and home-schooling, so Pinnovate saves the day! Order here.

If you notice someone going above and beyond for their neighbours or spot a local business who has pivoted and provided for their community during these uncertain times, we want to know! Nominate these local heroes so we can give them a shout out and continue to spread positive news.
